Abstract

Gender inequality is differentiation between people due to gender. Since ages there has been perception towards genders depending on their sexes, strengths, capacity and capability to do a certain task. Lack of gender equality not only limits women’s access to resources and opportunities, but also imperils the life prospects of the future generation. India being the second fastest growing economy in the world, rapid economic growth, the explosion of microcredit programs and self-help groups, and laudable efforts to increase women’s political participation, gender disparities have remained deep and persistent in India. Raising women's participation in the labour force to the same level as men can boost India's GDP by 27 per cent, IMF Chief Christine Lagarde and Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg have said in a joint paper.
