Abstract

This article aims at placing in perspective why FSSAI introduced new regulations to ensure food safety in India. The growth of online food ordering business coupled with changing consumptions pattern, enhanced consciousness for healthy food mandates implementation of ‘farm to fork’ food traceability (Food traceability in India - CII FACE & GS1 India). The facelessness of food business operators (FBOs) behind the opaque wall of online food delivery applications enabled them to flout the norms of hygiene and nutrition standards. This was realized by FSSAI in 2018 17 when several such food establishments were found to be wanting of a proper license thereby making new set of regulations a necessity. Since then FSSAI has come up with several initiatives for making the FBOs accountable,  enhancing public private partnerships, training of food inspectors and improving the quality of testing labs. This article also aims to recognize the challenges of lack of trained resources & accredited food testing labs, absence of food traceability system across the value chain and transparency of public private partnerships.
